Bomba y Plena in Miami

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The percussive traditions in the city of Miami are a rich combination of historical styles and new trends in world music. One can find all kinds of music in the city, where the nightclubs are constant demonstrations of the evolutions in rhythm, taking the earthy sounds of drums and setting them to electronic beats. Although these sounds are entirely contemporary, and even sound a bit futuristic, their origins are rather old, rhythmically, and reflect the world views and cultural traditions that are constantly migrating.

The diverse makeup of Miami’s population is the result of these migrations, and the local culture is a mix of European and Latin histories, although all parts of the world are represented here. Anyone visiting the city, whether on a cultural vacation, or to visit one of the best Miami golf resorts , will very likely come across bomba and plena .

They’re often mentioned together, although they are entirely different rhythms. Bomba and plena originate from Puerto Rico, and the tight relationship between the people in Miami and the island to the east is one that influences these Caribbean percussive traditions . Bomba is an older form, developed from African rhythms on the island in the colonial times of the 17th century, and plena is only a hundred years old. They both have open rhythms that are subject to great improvisation, and both are used to make comments on the daily life of the people. It may be heard as background music, and with a little investigation, its foreground reveals some fascinating visions of a shifting world.

Choosing the Sexiest Halloween Costume

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

If you had to choose between the Bride of Frankenstein’s Monster and the Bride of Dracula, the choice would be obvious, wouldn’t it? The legend of the vampire has always had a sexier allure than the wife of the creature once played by Boris Karloff. If you take a look at womens Halloween costumes , you’ll find a number of characters can be equally sexy, such as the costume of an Arabian Princess, a Sexy Nurse, or a Vixen Pirate Wench. But the Vampiress has always had an attraction ever since Bram Stoker first introduced the lovely sharp-fanged ladies who met Jonathan Harker in Dracula’s castle.

It’s difficult to say exactly how vampires became associated with sexiness, from Dracula to the Twilight movies, because these creatures of the night first began as mythological beings who fed on the essence of life (usually blood), and the belief in them may be prehistoric in nature. The first actual work of fiction regarding vampires, though, was contained in John Polidori’s 1819 work, The Vampyre , which influenced later works such as the little known Varney the Vampire to the well known Dracula.

For some reason, this creature has been with us before humanity knew how to write its own history and still seems to be with us today (with a number of television series and movies to support this claim), and over time, the idea of blood-sucking creatures of the night have somehow transformed themselves into sparkling, sexy vampires of both sexes, subject matter for entertainment that either gender might use as a costume for Halloween.

Testing the Waters on the Web

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

The internet has become a very useful tool. This is an age of electronic innovations , and the ability to communicate so much information wirelessly has opened up a number of new vistas. The world has become a different place, simultaneously smaller and more complicated. It’s possible to be in touch with friends all over the planet, and do business in nearly every country, with the world wide web. There’s also more information and access to books, music, film, and every other aspect of culture from around the world.

Beginning any enterprise is much easier today than it ever was. There is also a lot more competition, because anyone can have a website and show their wares at the click of a button. This means that anyone who’s thinking about starting something should be able to go ahead and do it. Beginning with a free website , there’s time to do test runs and see how a new business might fly. If it grows quickly, there’s always time to redesign and get more complex as the months go by.

One of the great things about the internet is that is does allow for reinvention. There is plenty of room to try out a site or an idea, and modify it over time, and come out with a new look, and a new presence. There is a history to things on the web, but for most users, the most important moment is the one happening right now.

North End is the Place to be in Boston

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Ask any Bostonian what is the best place to visit, and they’ll tell you to check out the North End . Located in the area of Hanover Street and Prince Street along the waterfront, this old neighborhood is the site of the Old North Church and the famous Paul Revere House.

The North End was the first stop for several waves of immigrants, especially the Italians. You’ll find plenty of Italian restaurants, pastry shops, and unique items shops all crammed into narrow streets. The smell of roasted garlic, basil tomato sauce and the sounds of happy diners fill the air. North End is often packed with tourist staying at the best hotels in Boston , and locals who flock to the area to chill and relax after a good bout of shopping.

Unlike Boston’s Back Bay and downtown Boston, North End has a very European feel to it; there are so many places to explore, especially on a summer week-end evening when the Italian feasts are held all through July and August. Like the Fisherman’s Feast and the St. Anthony’s Feast held the last Sunday in August.

After a great Italian meal, North End is a great place to hang out for the afternoon too. You can sit back and people watch or take a walk around the small narrow streets and alleyways and find some hidden treasures. The area is mostly Mom-and-Pops, which makes for a more low-key pleasant place to keep coming back to during your stay.

Rome on a Vespa

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

It is a symbol of the city, just as powerful and evocative as leather shoes and pasta. The Vespa has caught the attention of travelers and locals for over 60 years, and there’s no signs of it slowing down. The motor scooter, named Vespa because it’s narrow “waist” makes it look like a wasp, is a kind of by-product of the war. Piaggio, the maker, was in the business of military manufacturing, and all the main plants were bombed to the ground. When the war was over, he conceived of an idea to make low-cost vehicles for the citizens of Italy, and ones that would compliment the urban landscapes.

One of the first things that people notice when they set out of their Rome hotel is that the streets and alleys can get very narrow. There are many places in the city that were only accessible by walking, but a little scooter can get in between some of these tight spots as well. Never one to shun his sense of design, and understanding that the people of Rome are some of the most discerning and styling people in the world, he took great care in developing a machine that looked as good as it ran.

Constructing a body so that the drive chain wouldn’t spray grime all over the bike, or the rider, he also had his team construct it so that it would also be a very comfortable ride. It’s low to the ground, the controls as fairly easy as motorcycles go, and it’s small enough that one can almost have conversations with other riders. As anyone who’s seen the famous Italian films with the scooters featured knows, they do look delightfully stylish and modern. Today, visitors can rent the scooters and take special tours of Rome on Vespas . It’s just one more way of doing what Romans do.

Atlanta Sporting Events

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Atlanta is a very large American city with lots of big business and culture. One of the ways that the locals can spend their time off from working and get involved with city pride is to pile into the sporting arenas and cheer on their local teams. They have some great teams in the American football, baseball and basketball who are taking on the big league teams with force.

The Atlanta Falcons are a football team getting ready for another big year. During the summer months the players get involved in community activities by raising money for charities and showing up to local events. Then as the season grows closer they teams start to come together for training camp and gear up for the first games out. There is news about the new players they are picking to join and who may be leaving. Each year is a different mix.

The basketball season may have just ended but that doesn’t mean the Atlanta Hawks are sleeping. They are picking their new players for the up and coming season. The cheerleaders are getting their new ladies together and learning new routines. The arena is getting their space cleaned and tuned up to run thousands of people through smoothly and the new season tickets are on sale. So if you are planning a visit in the fall you may want to check out some tickets to see an Atlanta Hawks game.

Right now, in the summer time, baseball is at its peak. The Atlanta Braves are putting out their best pitches to try and win the world series. This summer the Braves have been doing pretty well and the stadium is a great place to relax, eat peanuts and drink a couple of beers. Just get a taxi from the five star hotel Atlanta has for you. Your going to love it.
