The Business World Needs IO Psychology
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011Business has evolved, and not just in terms of the technology used in order to get things done. The importance of management skills, training, and even the way that management views employees has changed. Perhaps this is the most important evolution as personnel gave way to human resources which is now giving way to terms like Talent Management. Companies have realized that employees are not just cogs in a machine, but are a crucial resource in the growth and success of the business.
The field of industrial and organizational psychology or io psychology , attempts to address many of the issues surrounding employee relations within large organizations. They study things like workplace diversity and leadership development. They also address subjects related to organizational effectiveness, analyzing current company communication and relationships and helping design systems to achieve organizational goals.
To prepare for these jobs, many of which are associated with the HR or Talent Management departments of large corporations and agencies, students need to pursue advanced degrees in IO psychology. There are programs available at numerous universities around the country. Many now include an online component, allowing working students to easily complete coursework without interfering with their job. There are even degree programs that are conducted completely online and teach students practical skills as well as theory.
