Proper Gun Storage
Friday, February 18th, 2011Safety is a priority for gun owners. Responsible owners will make sure they know how to properly load, fire, and care for their firearms. They may learn these skills from their parents, if they are raised in a household that regularly handles guns. They may learn as a teenager or adult, by enrolling in a gun safety course or by seeking teaching from an experienced gun collector, hunter, or other owner in their community.
Learning how to store guns is also an important facet of gun safety. The cliche of a gun kept in a shoebox in the closet or under the bed is a recipe for disaster. Leaving a gun where children can easily find it is a significant error in judgment — and kids can find just about anything. This type of haphazard storage also leaves the guns readily available to intruders or thieves, in which case a gun owner could find their gun turned against them.
Guns should be stored in locked cabinets or safes in order to prevent the situations described above. Safe manufacturers have designed a variety of secure storage options for gun owners, whether they have one gun or several dozen. There are wall gun safes for one or two handguns and larger cabinets for rifles and multiple guns. There is no excuse for a gun owner to neglect the need for secure gun storage.
