Types of Sheet Music
Thursday, October 21st, 2010The advent of printed sheet music took composition to the public. Amateur composers could easily compose and share their works with performers and amateur performers suddenly had access to printed music to use in schools, home, and even public performance.
Today, there are several different forms of sheet music available. The most basic is for a single instrument or voice, though popular song sheets can be purchased that combine piano music along with the vocal part. For music that requires a larger arrangement, each performer has their own sheet music that shows only their part.
A score, on the other hand, contains all the parts, vocal and instrumental, for a piece of music. A full score is usually very large and is designed for use by a conductor. A miniature score is smaller and not useful for directing performance. Instead it is idea for studying a piece of music.
Other forms of sheet music include a study score, which usually includes commentary and educational notations, a short score, which reduces a score fro many instruments to a few staves, and vocal and piano scores. There are also lead sheets, tablatures , and chord charts.
