Best Outdoor Activities for your Family Vacation

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Family vacations can be ordeals, or they can be some of the best times of your life. The trick is to find a balance between the sort of activities that your kids will love, and those that provide enough fresh air and exercise to make them sleep soundly every night. That all-important “you time” allows a tranquil evening when you can plan the next day.

You know your kids best, so will have some initial ideas about the best outdoor activities for your family vacation. That doesn’t mean you have to stay in your comfort zone. Some of the most memorable vacations can involve parents and kids trying out a new adventure or activity for the first time.

Hiking is perfect for introducing youngsters to nature and the glories of the great outdoors. It’s also an inexpensive way to encourage them to take an interest in fitness and exerting themselves. Parents will be surprised at the staying power of even the youngest children. Kids as young as four or five will skip up mountain trails as if they feel it is a challenge. To keep their interest levels high, set little tasks like spotting wildlife, searching for wild-flowers or helping with the map-reading.

Mountain-biking is ideal for slightly older kids. National Parks offer some of the best resources for this kind of activity. Trails are usually well-marked, and are graded according to difficulty. Park rangers can offer advice on the most suitable options for family rides, and can also provide tips on the best places for picnics or refreshment breaks.

Kayaking can be an exhilarating vacation activity, ideal for older kids and teenagers. Even the sulkiest adolescent will come out of their shell when riding thrilling rapids or negotiating a river bend. Beginners’ courses and instruction offer a sensible and safe way of learning the basics. Once you are out on the water as a family, it’s just you and the elements, and the big sky.

Whichever outdoor activities you choose for your family vacation, don’t underestimate the importance of snacks. Active kids need constant refueling. It also seems to work miracles if you promise them that there’s an ice-cream sundae with their name on it at the end of that eight-mile hike.
Use these simple tips to create life long memories that your family will cherish forever. A great location to start your family outdoor adventures is North Carolina, check for Durham hotels which will offer some beautiful scenery and many different adventures for you and your family.

Casinos are the Heart of Vegas

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

A nothing little town in the middle of the desert somehow grew into a mecca for those hoping to test their luck at games of chance. Eventually that foundation of gambling expanded to include a full-blown city with industry and commerce as well as entertainment and conferences that had nothing to do with poker or gambling. However, there is no question that vegas hotels would be nowhere if they didn’t have casinos.

In fact, it was casinos that came first — before there were even big hotels. Over time developers realized that by putting gambling , beds, and restaurants under one roof, they could keep gamblers under one roof from arrival to departure — and all those profits would go into their tills. Eventually they realized they needed to add entertainment so that the spouses had something to do while their significant others were gambling. Later they decided to add attractions to keep the kids busy too.

It is hard to imagine that Vegas will ever evolve past its casinos. Guests may be exchanging poker tips while seated at five star restaurants or taking a gondola ride down a reproduction of a Venice canal, but they are still going to get in a few games of roulette or put some money in a slot machine before they leave. It’s the ultimate and universal experience of the city.

Singapore’s Celebration of Food

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

SingaporeFood, what better way to experience a region or a city than to walk along, or sit leisurely and to take in the local flavor.  In this city the restaurants and cafes and the five star hotels Singapore offers up much more than eventually ends up on the beautiful plate.  A small island, a small city, with such a variety and abundance to offer, the most notable influences range from Chinese, Italian…to French and East Indian.  The people of this country live with passion.  They live within it rather.  And what is more common to a culture in regards to passion, than food.  Between the street side hawkers and the fancy restaurants, there is something for every traveller, something to take in and take home.

The main ingredient to a meal, is the chef, his or her care, love and preparation.  Chefs of Singapore find their enjoyment out of creating the food that the people eat, as any art form and a very spiritual form of expression and care as well.  Where to find this may be a daunting task to any new visitor, but it can seriously be found on any street corner, and if it’s not readily noticeable, all the tourist need to do is ask.  Delicious and delicately prepared dishes are around every corner, much like hot dog carts in Manhattan or Chicago, flavorful afternoons are abundant.  In Singapore, food is a festival, literally.  There are over 6,000 opportunities to experience it all.  And the main attraction, food, is decorated and adorned with lights, live music, dancing and parties.  From satay to sushi, the food nourishes and liberates and exposes visitors from other countries to the culinary flavor and celebration of part of what it means to be alive.

Taking to the Road

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

In many parts of the country Spring is starting to make itself felt. It’s not just the hordes of kids heading out on Spring Break vacations and the return of Daylight Saving Time . It’s more about a change in the weather. The days are getting longer, the temperatures are getting warmer and the plants and trees are beginning to bloom and grow. After months being cooped up inside, people are starting to dream of escaping into the great outdoors. Some are even planning their first road trip of the year.

The idea of heading out on the open road offers more than just the privacy and freedom of a car. It gives travelers the opportunity to actually see the countryside, instead of just flying over it. Armed with a road map , a packed cooler, and an mp3 player full of road music, anyone can set up to experience roadside America.

It is essential that road trippers supplement their gps with an actual, physical map. A GPS is only concerned with the most direct or fastest route, not the most interesting and entertaining. Only by spreading out a map of california across the hood of a car or on the bed of a motel room can travelers get the big picture of their trip. They can map out routes for themselves, taking into account natural attractions like mountains and rivers as well as landmarks and historical sites that appear on these maps. Vacations are about spontaneity and fun — and there’s nothing more spontaneous that heading out on the road with a destination in mind, but a route that will be subject to the whims of the travelers.

Avoiding Theme Park Accidents

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Amusement parks are magical places to small children. Even older children and adults can get caught up in the atmosphere of fun and excitement and have an amazing experience. The trick is not to get so caught up in the fun that you forget to follow a few simple precautions — because, despite what you think, Disney world accidents happen everyday.

This isn’t to say that people are seriously injured or die every day. Fatalities at theme parks are still rather rare, given the vast numbers of visitors who daily attend parks around the country. It’s the smaller accidents, the bruises and sprains, the sunburns and heat exhaustion, the allergy attacks and fainting spells that can dampen an otherwise wonderful park excursion.

The best way to avoid any sort of theme park mishap is to plan ahead. Wear appropriate clothing, carry lots of sun block — and use it liberally — and bring along any prescription medications and treatments you might need. You should make sure that anyone with an existing medical condition is aware of how that condition may be affected by specific rides and attractions. Paying attention to the warning signs about rides and asking questions of park personnel if something isn’t clear are the best defense against a medically-related emergency.

While there’s nothing you can do to avoid an accident that is the fault of the park or its employees, as long as you plan ahead and obey all posted signs and attendant instructions, you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding even the smallest incidents during your visit.

La Jolla Books and Beaches

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

There are few things that can beckon a true book lover like the beach. For anyone who’s taken to spending vacations by the sea, the allure of time away from it all with a favorite reading list holds enormous rewards. For those who get to live here, La Jolla offers that same solace all year round. There are very good reasons why La Jolla homes sales are so carefully watched, because they speak of a sophisticated local culture that understands the things necessary to cultivate the good life.

Fortunately for the locals and the visitors, there are plenty of excellent book shops in town. These fall into the general bookstore category, as well as ones that offer something a little more eclectic. Warwick’s is one of the most endearing spots, having a history here since the 1930s. Today, book hounds can find their favorite titles, get recommendations from a savvy staff, and also find plenty of other goodies, like office supplies, and pens.

For the locals, La Jolla Athenaeum is a rare treasure. Here, one can’t purchase any of the books, but a membership in this non-profit museum entitles one to check out editions from their excellent collection of music and art. It is a feast for the senses, activated by the imagination of the reader’s eyes and ears, and provides for a remarkable companion to the lovely beaches.

St. Louis’ Poet

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Saint Louis is a city with a remarkable history. Its place in the chain of events of the past two centuries is complex, and reveals a never-ending web of connection between the past and the present. It would take the voice of a poet to be able to make the links so that they could span the social, the historical, and the emotional, and the city has one in Maya Angelou . Visitors looking for accommodations will find themselves walking in some of her own footsteps.

Some of her most formative years were spent in Arkansas, where her keen observation of human beings particularly in regard to race, were formed. She did spend more time here with her mother, before heading out to San Francisco. There she became interested in studying dance formally, and did this for many years until her calling as a poet woke up. It began with a novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , and eventually turned into a voice that would make her the country’s poet laureate.

Her words are widely known, and her poems have been published in multiple languages all over the world. The woman who traveled the world as a dancer is now finding her words travel multiple worlds, and affecting multiple inner spaces with a vision of hope and profound compassion. This is the city that saw her birth, and time spent in Saint Louis hotels can offer hints at a remarkable vision.
