When you visit some of the coastal towns and beaches of Mexico there is one thing that you should keep in mind. Most definitely you should be prepared to have one of the greatest times of your life. Okay, there are a few other things like bringing sun screen and appropriate beach wear. Mind your manners and be respectful of the environment and the locals. Bomba y Plena in Miami

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The percussive traditions in the city of Miami are a rich combination of historical styles and new trends in world music. One can find all kinds of music in the city, where the nightclubs are constant demonstrations of the evolutions in rhythm, taking the earthy sounds of drums and setting them to electronic beats. Although these sounds are entirely contemporary, and even sound a bit futuristic, their origins are rather old, rhythmically, and reflect the world views and cultural traditions that are constantly migrating.

The diverse makeup of Miami’s population is the result of these migrations, and the local culture is a mix of European and Latin histories, although all parts of the world are represented here. Anyone visiting the city, whether on a cultural vacation, or to visit one of the best Miami golf resorts , will very likely come across bomba and plena .

They’re often mentioned together, although they are entirely different rhythms. Bomba and plena originate from Puerto Rico, and the tight relationship between the people in Miami and the island to the east is one that influences these Caribbean percussive traditions . Bomba is an older form, developed from African rhythms on the island in the colonial times of the 17th century, and plena is only a hundred years old. They both have open rhythms that are subject to great improvisation, and both are used to make comments on the daily life of the people. It may be heard as background music, and with a little investigation, its foreground reveals some fascinating visions of a shifting world.

North End is the Place to be in Boston

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Ask any Bostonian what is the best place to visit, and they’ll tell you to check out the North End . Located in the area of Hanover Street and Prince Street along the waterfront, this old neighborhood is the site of the Old North Church and the famous Paul Revere House.

The North End was the first stop for several waves of immigrants, especially the Italians. You’ll find plenty of Italian restaurants, pastry shops, and unique items shops all crammed into narrow streets. The smell of roasted garlic, basil tomato sauce and the sounds of happy diners fill the air. North End is often packed with tourist staying at the best hotels in Boston , and locals who flock to the area to chill and relax after a good bout of shopping.

Unlike Boston’s Back Bay and downtown Boston, North End has a very European feel to it; there are so many places to explore, especially on a summer week-end evening when the Italian feasts are held all through July and August. Like the Fisherman’s Feast and the St. Anthony’s Feast held the last Sunday in August.

After a great Italian meal, North End is a great place to hang out for the afternoon too. You can sit back and people watch or take a walk around the small narrow streets and alleyways and find some hidden treasures. The area is mostly Mom-and-Pops, which makes for a more low-key pleasant place to keep coming back to during your stay.

Rome on a Vespa

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

It is a symbol of the city, just as powerful and evocative as leather shoes and pasta. The Vespa has caught the attention of travelers and locals for over 60 years, and there’s no signs of it slowing down. The motor scooter, named Vespa because it’s narrow “waist” makes it look like a wasp, is a kind of by-product of the war. Piaggio, the maker, was in the business of military manufacturing, and all the main plants were bombed to the ground. When the war was over, he conceived of an idea to make low-cost vehicles for the citizens of Italy, and ones that would compliment the urban landscapes.

One of the first things that people notice when they set out of their Rome hotel is that the streets and alleys can get very narrow. There are many places in the city that were only accessible by walking, but a little scooter can get in between some of these tight spots as well. Never one to shun his sense of design, and understanding that the people of Rome are some of the most discerning and styling people in the world, he took great care in developing a machine that looked as good as it ran.

Constructing a body so that the drive chain wouldn’t spray grime all over the bike, or the rider, he also had his team construct it so that it would also be a very comfortable ride. It’s low to the ground, the controls as fairly easy as motorcycles go, and it’s small enough that one can almost have conversations with other riders. As anyone who’s seen the famous Italian films with the scooters featured knows, they do look delightfully stylish and modern. Today, visitors can rent the scooters and take special tours of Rome on Vespas . It’s just one more way of doing what Romans do.

Meditate on Rockville

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Visiting Rockville, Maryland, is sort of like being in one of the nicest places in the world. After just a few hours, it occurs to most people that there’s no reason anyone wouldn’t want to live here. It obviously boasts a very high standard of living, and they seem to know how to keep the balance in a lively community, taking care of each other just enough, but not getting too nosy the way some small towns can. It’s also close enough to DC and other big cities that those urban adventures are always near.

The time spent here though is for luxury, and enjoying all the finest things that life has to offer. Hanging out in cafes, and getting some extra sleep in Rockville hotels are just the beginning. It’s interesting how, for many people (and even perhaps the vast majority), relaxing on vacation is one of the hardest things to do, and can be enormously stressful. Perhaps it’s because people do tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves, making the vacation the one time of year that they can rewind. Or perhaps it’s guilt about enjoying something for a change.

These are all based on thought patterns, and thought patterns can be changed. At the very least, they can be slowed with a little time meditating every day. It might seem ironic to come to a gorgeous place and need to spend time meditating to learn how to relax, but there’s a lot of it going around here. There are many centers for mediation in the city, including the TM Center , Buddhist Temples, and places like the New Future Society , who merge their yoga classes with more intensive meditation training.

Coming to a beautiful place and spending some time learning about meditation is a very good use of time. It’s a helpful skill that will last a lifetime, and there are also opportunities to get to know the people in the place a little better. The best benefit, however, is that it’s a chance to catch the breath and see things from a new point of view, and that’s a priceless thing.

When Atlanta was a Beehive

Monday, June 14th, 2010

It doesn’t all begin with REM after all. Long before the boys from Athens started making their way to the big city, playing bars and clubs for small and stunned audiences, there was the B-52s . Whatever contributions Atlanta has made to the world of alternative music, the first wave has to be acknowledged as beginning in 1976, when they first started putting their sounds and their sense of humor together to create something no one had ever seen before.

It almost seemed too hip for anywhere, except for the deepest parts of Los Angeles, where the Hollywood people did not dare to tread. They had a sense of irony long before it became a commodity, and it was always totally fabulous, with a capital letter (it doesn’t matter which).

It wasn’t only REM that they would influence. They were playing, or anticipating, the same kinds of sensibilities that are found in the early Talking Heads stuff. The is music that is great to listen and dance to, but it also sounds like music that is quoting music. It’s as if there were a deeply detached artistry involved, making fun of the chords and the rhythms they were playing, even while they were playing it loud and passionately.

It makes sense that the whole ambience of the band would be shrouded in irony, when the name refers to the beehive hairdo , and the female members were sporting that same look along with all the accoutrements of new wave, pre-punk, and post, all in the same colorful and bouncy fun breath.

It’s hard to say whether anyone could have predicted that it would come from here. Five star hotels in Atlanta have always been famous and fabulous, and still certainly are, but the place in music history is still largely hidden. But the roots are here. And the roots are not blond.

Vaudeville in Philadelphia

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Travelers are often history buffs, even if they don’t start out that way. After a visit to a few places for the beaches and the parties, the rest of the place starts to look more interesting. How people happen to be living in one particular place is always an interesting conundrum, and that’s tied to the history of the area. There are so many histories in just one city that it’s impossible to know them all. Even the smallest town in the country has more stories in it than are possible to learn in a lifetime. So when we come to a city like Philadelphia, this reaches enormous proportions.

With all of the obvious historical connections to the founding of the country, there are plenty of chances to visit the important places in town where the major events took place. There are histories of other things as well, of course, including the histories of the ethnic communities that make up the city, and then there is also the arts. Philadelphia as a center of Vaudeville has been the subject of theatrical productions, and it’s also a running theme in the city.

With history, any current can become a running theme once one starts looking for it. But here, the connections are more obvious, since this was a natural stopping point for entertainers on their way to Manhattan. It’s as much true now as it was then. Back in the heyday of Vaudeville, however, there were plenty of other stories of intrigue and interest, including B.F. Keith ‘s own biography as a theatre mogul who cornered the market on Vaudeville theatres at one time. And for those who really long for an old-fashioned kind of luxury, Philadelphia hotels offer a timelessness that reflects the here and now as much as the time when modern comic geniuses were still working the boards.

Skinny Girl in Manhattan

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Manhattan. This City needs no introduction, and neither do the housewives that live in it! The Real Housewives of New York City has had rave reviews from critics and fans. It has become its own phenomenon. The housewife in the midst of most of the controversy this season is Bethenny. Bethenny is a self made professional and business woman. With her strong entrepreneurial spirit, she has started her own successful business, Skinny Girl. She has also released a best seller titled: Naturally thin: Unleash Your Skinny Girl. She is currently in a feud with costar housewife Jill Zarin. Jill has accused her of using her for her connections and not taking their friendship seriously. In a now infamous voicemail, Bethany told Jill to get a hobby. In the opening line of the hit T.V. show, her line is “the city is my playground” and boy does she mean it! Bethany had a photo shoot done for the “I would rather go naked than wear fur” campaign with the Manhattan skyline in the background. She has made a name for herself in the city and has built a close network of friends. Going out to top Manhattan restaurants and posh lounges is a great way to play. Stay a night in manhattan hotels new york and play like Bethany. Bethany has been spotted all around Manhattan and here are just some of the events that she made it to, as well as a few that she respectfully missed.

The Mercedes Benz Fashion show. Manhattan would be nothing without fashion, and fashion would be nothing without Manhattan. In one episode when Alex invites the housewives to be a part of the Brooklyn fashion week, it was extremely evident that haute couture definitely has its place in Manhattan!

Sak’s Fifth Avenue , Jill Zarin event. Bethany was currently not on speaking terms with Jill and was not invited, nor did she care to attend. About thirty of Jill’s closest friends attended the event, including the Countess.

Time Square Billboard photo shoot. Frankel bared it all over her playground making the biggest fashion statement ever.
