Activities in Chennai

When one visits the Indian city of Chennai for the first time, it is easy to become overwhelmed so much by the beauty of the city, so much so that it may take your breath away.  From the serene and lush landscapes that surround the beaches to the ancient architecture of some of the most beautiful temples in the world.  The traveler with a penchant for photography will be taken away with the photo opportunities and the tourist with an eye for art and a mind for history will have galleries and museums.

There are other activities that are tourist friendly as well, such as great shopping and eating opportunities.  For shopping, the markets are filled with trinkets as well as historical and antique artifacts and furniture.  For those interested in fashion, there are special markets wherein the jewelry is fine, hand-carved and inlaid with precious gems and stones, but very inexpensive and the silk scarves are handmade from silk.

The market places such as the Burma Bazaar, will also offer much in the way of hand made arts and paintings each distinct and backed by years of traditional styles and techniques.  Stone and bronze sculptures are also just as varied and numerous.  And be it in a restaurant, a cafe or four star hotel, Chennai offer up the best of Indian cuisine when the day of sight seeing or shopping has left you famished.

Just as with the culture, and the arts, the food is just as varied, and the food of Chennai is also Indian but very distinctive due to the use of local recipes and ingredients.  Many of the traditional dishes are vegetarian, however there are dishes made with chicken, mutton or fish and many of them are a bit spicy but oh so flavorful.  And as traditional for this region, the food in the restaurants is most often times served on a banana leaf instead of a plate.  In all every aspect the exotic nature and the culture of the city is full of surprises.
